REGISTRATION

All current UC Berkeley students may register for the tournament. There is no registration fee. The tournament is played in teams of 2, so find a partner or drop by our meetings on Fridays at 7-9PM in 215 Dwinelle to see who wants to team up. Then sign up online using the Sign-Up button above.

RANKING

After all six rounds, teams are ranked based on the number of rounds won. Ties are broken using two-step dominance. (Two-step dominance for your team is the number of rounds won by all the teams that your team beat. If you beat stronger teams, you will probably have a higher two-step dominance.)

PRIZES

All participating teams will receive consolation prizes and be guarenteed six rounds. Each member of the first place team will also receive a trophy. The top three teams will receive additional prizes valued up to $50. In addition, members of the top three teams will each receive two decks of customized Canasta Club playing cards.

SCORING

Due to time constraints, the tournament will modify the rules of "Classic Canasta" used at the Berkeley Canasta Club. The modifications are:

• In each round, teams will play until one team reaches 1500 points. The team that reaches 1500 points first is declared the winner. If both teams exceed 1500 points in the same game, then the team with the higher cumulative score is declared the winner.
• Only canastas (mixed or pure), red 3's, and going out count for points. Melds are negligible and therefore count for no points.
• The point system is:
  
  • Mixed Canasta: 300
  • Pure Canasta: 500
  • Each Red 3: 100
  • If all four Red 3s: 800
  • Going out: 100
  • Going out all at once: 200
